WestMAC seals Football Firsts and Seconds premierships and three Touch Football premierships in successful Term 3 season
WestMAC has achieved a prestigious premiership double claiming the TAS Firsts XI Football Crown and the Seconds XI Title in a powerhouse result.
The undefeated Firsts team lifted the historic premiership following a dominant second-half performance, highlighted by goals to Football Captain Cardiff Pond as well as to Geordie Ramm, against Ormiston College last week.
WestMAC were narrowly pipped as Champion Football School, finishing runner-up, also boosted by a grand final berth to the Year 10 team.
WestMAC Principal Geoff McLay said the exceptional Term 3 results, especially in Football and Touch Football, were a reward for a thriving team culture as well as hard work and detailed preparation from both students and coaches.
“Our students receive access to specialised coaching sessions from internal and external staff,’’ Mr McLay said. “Every WestMAC student receives an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge.
“In Football we have a link with local club Western Pride, with expert club coaches helping to mentor our Senior players to soar to new heights resulting in the record-breaking feat of securing premierships in both the Firsts and Seconds.
“Both the Firsts and Seconds teams demonstrated the College focus of commitment to team unity, working for each other and demonstrating passion and tenacity to produce a high standard of play during the pressure of finals.
“For the touch football season, we focused on a strategy of building basic skills and developing teamwork, and this paid off for many of our teams with three sides securing premierships from five grand final berths.’’
In touch football, five WestMAC sides secured premiership grand final berths with three securing titles: the undefeated Year 9 team, the Year 9 Navy Supplementary and Year 8 Navy Supplementary sides, respectively.
WestMAC finished third as Champion Touch Football School, after being co-leaders coming into the finals round. Grand final berths were also gained by the Year 7 and Year 8 sides.
Mr McLay said WestMAC achieved record participation levels for Term Three sport with 30 teams taking part in the TAS competition.
In the Firsts XI grand final, Sports captain Daniel Elger secured a 1-0 half-time advantage following a corner pocket rocket in the final minutes of the first half.
WestMAC dominated the second half resulting in a goal from Geordie Ramm, who netted the perfectly placed cross from Jai Cuthbertson for a 2-0 lead.
In the final minutes of the match Cardiff Pond beat the Ormiston College keeper in a one-on-one duel after taking advantage of an assist from Mitchell Colaso to fittingly seal the premiership with a 3-0 result.
Western Pride club coaches Pat Boyle (Firsts) and Andy Sinclair (Seconds) mentored the WestMAC teams to premierships.
Football captain Cardiff Pond praised the team spirit in the WestMAC Football program and said winning the premiership “was the perfect script for my final year of school.’’
“It’s very special to win this title, it’s an honour to be the captain of the first WestMAC team to achieve this feat and create history,’’ Cardiff said.
“With our Firsts team we played for each other, it was an incredible team effort. We had a strong team who believed we could do it.
“It’s a dream come true to achieve this in my last year, especially because I have been with some of my team-mates since kindergarten and Prep.’’
“We had support of the coaches and the Sports department…helping with the little one-percenters such as having a gym to work out in before matches, and a beautiful field to train on, which made a difference to our team.’’
