Close your eyes and picture yourself being forcefully taken from your family. Imagine marching for 33 days in brutal conditions to Ethiopia. Imagine being forced to fight with rebels, with the fear of losing your life, all at just 6 years old.
Deng Adut, Defence Lawyer and Refugee Advocate, graced WestMAC's Senior Presentation Night with an inspiring speech on empathy that silenced the Lostroh Centre.
Deng was that six year old boy, a refugee and now criminal lawyer, who faced adversity and became an international inspiration.
When awarded NSW Australian of the Year, Deng humbly said 'I will work extremely hard because I don't feel I deserve it so I will work to deserve it."
His speech to Senior students and their families encouraged everyone to focus their attention outwards.
“We all belong equally in this world and young adults are the key to the future.”
“Become your own role model and give back to the community,” said Deng.
"You are not Australian because you were born in Australia. You are Australian because it was born in you," Deng added.
Principal Geoff McLay invited Deng to speak at WestMAC after watching a provoking video on his personal journey.
"Deng has experienced afflictions that no child or man should endure. His determination is nothing short of remarkable and his speech will resonate with me for the rest of my life."
"We are deeply appreciative that Deng shared his journey which has inspired us to think creatively and compassionately about how we can make this world a better place," Geoff said.
