As communicated by our College Council Chair earlier this week, I have decided to complete my tenure as Principal of West Moreton Anglican College at the end of this year. This decision has been a difficult one to make; my time at WestMAC has been rich and rewarding, both professionally and personally. But, after a great deal of careful thought, I have concluded that the time is right for a range of reasons.

There is a general wisdom that the optimal tenure for a principal is somewhere between 12 and 15 years. Fewer than 12 years is likely not enough time to achieve sustainable organisational change and development. But any more than 15 years is sometimes regarded as a hindrance to new ideas, concepts, and organisational growth. The end of 2024 marks 14 years and 3 months in this role for me.

From an organisational perspective, the end of 2024 will see the following significant organisational milestones achieved:

- 2022-24 Strategic Plan.
- 30 Year Anniversary.
- Five-year Non-State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB) Review.

Additionally, our enrolments for 2025, 2026 and beyond are very healthy, and our financial position has been stable and strong for several years. The confluence of these dynamics, along with my strong belief that our leadership teams and staff are very capable and confident, makes this an ideal time to transition the principal’s role.

As for my future professional pathway, I’ve decided to take a short career break in the first part of 2025. Having spent 23 years in principal roles in a number of schools, it is time to refresh and rejuvenate. Beyond the break, I’m looking forward to pursuing other professional endeavours that afford me more discretionary time than I have in my current role.

Being WestMAC’s principal has been a privilege and a joy. As such, I feel a strong sense of responsibility to the College community to effect this transition smoothly and at the optimal time. I know in my heart that the end of 2024 is the correct timing.

The West Moreton Anglican College community has my unwavering commitment over the next nine months. I will continue to lead and make decisions in the best interests of our students, staff, and families. I look forward to opportunities to say farewell in the coming months.
